Amsterdam, February 21 - 23
We’ve been busy around Valentine’s Day. Chiara and Dennis, with Ellen and Francis in the pipeline. If only these were conquests of love not tempestuous assaults… Whether we’re under siege by storm this weekend or not, have a think about whether you’d rather let the cabin fever settle in or catch a few drops of rain and a whole lot of fun. Check out what’s on in Amsterdam and remember, je bent niet van zuiker gemaakt.
Speaking of which, if there’s one way of imposing blissful ignorance of the weather it’s by filling your ears with reggae and dub. Close your eyes and the gloomy rain splattered pavements of Amsterdam Nieuw-West will melt away into images of white sandy beaches dotted with palm trees and gently breaking waves of sapphire blue water.
After touring around the Netherlands and further afield, Shamba Lion Soundsystem are returning to BRET for a seven hour sesh of reggae and dub from the best of the Brixton scene. Catch the Amsterdam’s best MCs and reggae DJs for an evening of zen.
Fry-Day @ EAST
One theory says the origins of our favourite day of the week is Frigga, the fabled wife of Odin (and presumably a big one for the party). More recent research challenges that it is in fact the day when all food must be fried. Whichever school you follow, come and enjoy the fruits of the revisionists at Restaurant EAST.
They have a special menu of fries done every way you can imagine with irresistible toppings and alcoholic accompaniments.
Margarita Day @ De Tulp
Another one to kid yourself into sunny vibes. De Tulp is partnering up with Patrón Tequila and their funny bottles to bring you a thirteen hour Margarita marathon. Head there earlier to pair them up with the special creations of Lars the chef, or stroll in to catch the party at 23:00 and soak up the spirit with nachos and dancing.
OT301 Bass Carnival
Once a staple of nightlife, now an elusive beast, bass music finds a safe haven in Overtoom’s paradise of underground music. There will be drum and bass, dubstep, and steppers. It’s a little like getting beaten up by music. In a good way. Sample this from SNIK to get a flavour.
Tickets €5 in advance or €6 on the door. And remember, by going to OT301 you’re supporting an entirely volunteer-led movement to bring music, culture, and art to the people of Amsterdam.
Sunday Jazz @ The Birdhouse
For the recuperation of your limps and eardrums, swing and sidle down to the Birdhouse on Sunday afternoon. It’s a stunningly decorated restaurant/bar right by ARTIS. Settle into the nest and enjoy the live jazz over a bite or a drink. Worth making a reservation for larger groups.
Baos and Asian Mules
Or you might prefer something a little more low-key. After two months break, Happyhappyjoyjoy return with their famous afternoon of bao buns and games. Baos are self-explanatory. Games you’ll have to wait and see what they’ve got in store for you! Only €3.50 per bun. It’s brunch at an appropriate time with appropriate beverages. Enjoy!
