Amsterdam, 1st weekend of December
Sinterklaas and Piet have arrived! And that means Amsterdam is to be assaulted by howling winds, icy skies, and inflamed politico-cultural debates. Oh, and Christmas too. It is this inkling of festivity that marks the theme of this blog post! Read on to find out what’s on in Amsterdam December week #1!
Botanic @ Vondelbunker
Okay, so there are other artists playing, but the one we really want to hear is Botanic!
Pushing the borders of genre, Botanic experiment with trap beats, blues rhythms, and unbridled guitar to craft their wholly original, surprising, moving, energising tone. They’re set to release their first full album early 2020, so get down to Vondelbunker for a sneak preview of their new stuff. They’re on at 20:00, followed up by Surfing Stingrays, ParHazard, and then DJs to see your feet through some moves until closing in the small hours.
Entrance is free, as ever. It’s the perfect entry into your weekend, especially if you’re in need of a mixer to the spirit of inevitable pounding techno later on.
What do we all have in common? Yep, that’s right – we are all going to die.
Not trying to frighten or depress you! On the contrary – meeting the inevitable with solidarity, exploring the greatest mystery of life as one is a remarkably cathartic and liberating exercise. And yet there’s this whole taboo about bringing it up.
Cue: an event especially for people who have experiences to relate, questions to ask, fears to share. All over a nice cup of tea! This is free, but you are kindly asked to register via this link.
PS – we’re told the Kool Aid is particularly good.
The Amsterdam Light Festival is back!
Perhaps the silveriest of silver linings to Winter in Amsterdam is the quantity and artistry of the lights around the city. From this weekend until mid-January, the city will be awash with lights.
Whether exploring with the family, with friends, or with your date, you’d have to be a pretty cold soul not to feel a glimmer of joy making your way around. The best way to see it is by boat. You can book a tour here, but perhaps even more fun is to hire a boat and skipper yourself round the starry canals.
Sinterklaas @ De Hallen
It remains unclear whether this joker was making some socio-political point about the fetishisation of Christmas or fancied himself as a modern-day Lady Godiva. Perhaps he just liked the feeling of chilly air on his skin.
Anyway, besides being a (largely naked) Sinterklaas, this picture has nothing to do with Saturday’s event. Shunning the horse in favour of everyone’s favourite old tram station, he’s hanging at De Hallen on Saturday afternoon. Why not pay him a visit and combine with lunch and a film?
Watch figure skating
In keeping with all things Christmassy, here’s the opportunity to watch some talented kids figure skating their way around a rink. It’s not every day this event comes around. In fact it’s every last Saturday of the month.
Perhaps you and your family want to find out more about figure skating? Perhaps you’re just hoping for some slapstick entertainment. Either way it’s worth swinging by if you find yourself in Oost this Saturday.
