What’s on Amsterdam? December week #3

Amsterdam, December 13th-15th

It is my unhappy duty to report the loss of a treasure of the Amsterdam landscape. After nearly 20 years of quietly rusting away, the old Russian submarine by NDSM-wherf is to be towed away on Monday. No one is quite sure who owns it or why it’s there. But it seems these mysteries will be lost to the depths. Have a watch of these guys exploring its secrets, shed a tear, and then check out what’s on Amsterdam December week #3!

Ugly Sweater Christmas Party

Ugly Sweater Christmas Party Promo Poster
  • Friday 17:00 - 22:00
  • Free!
  • Nieuw-West

This is your chance to dig deep into your wardrobe, shift aside mothballs and cobwebs, open the package covered with warning stickers, and reveal your most horrible, most distasteful, most nauseatingly lurid Christmas jumper. Uncomfortable numbers of Santas, snowmen, and reindeer are encouraged. So are battery operated light-up varieties.

The event is totally free, and totally terrible in the most awesome way possible. Plus there’s plenty of free gluwijn on offer!

RSVP for a free ticket here.

Be there with bells on (literally).

Dubstation

  • Friday 18:00 - 02:00
  • Free!
  • Nieuw-West

As the winter winds chill you to the bone, it’s time to kindle a fire within. What better way than with the warm fuzzy bass of Dub music. The event is entirely free and will give you the illusion of standing in the Jamaica sun in the Amsterdam winter.

Please still wrap up warm though. Nostalgia and imagination can only ward off hypothermia for so long.

Bare Time art exhibition

  • Saturday or Sunday 14:00 - 18:00
  • Free!
  • Centrum

Bare Time is a story of three performers spending 4 hours in W139. Their warm-up, dance, and rest, are performed on a loop. Gradually they fall into a choreographed pattern. Simultaneously, however, the stage provides the capacity for micro-events to influence the flow, and free them from the construct. There is a search for a common time, constructed within a fight for the partition of times.

You can come and go at any time. Join the common time for as long or as short as you feel. No reservation required. Worth wandering in.

7 Years of Love @ Atelier Schinkel

  • Saturday 22:00 - 06:00
  • 11
  • Zuid-West

It’s always good to dance. It’s especially good when you’re dancing for a cause.

The Love Foundation are an international network of students and artists creating cultural events and beautiful designs to raise money for water development projects around the world. They started from just one for-profit event in Maastricht 7 years ago, and are now a global community of 500 volunteers in 11 countries.

80% of profits go straight to continuing their good work. We’re told room one is for slow love and room two is for fast love.

Take from that what you will.

Tickets here.

Free Vegan Cheese Tasting

  • Sunday 12:00 - 15:00
  • Free!
  • Oud-West

I tend to get a little over excited when I see the words ‘free’ and ‘cheese’ appear in the same sentence. The ‘vegan’ is a bit of a curveball, but then I’m all for having a little more variety in one’s wealth of experience.

Also, FREE CHEESE! Worry about origins later.

Get there on time – sold out = sold out!

Storytelling @ De School

Storytelling @ De School
  • Sunday 20:00 - 22:00
  • Free!
  • West

The usual stories told at the Amsterdam’s honeypot of thumping bass involve a meandering plot, the word ‘WHAAAT?’ shouted directly into the eardrum, and ending with the phrase ‘you probably had to be there’ before both participants vanish into the smoke never to speak again.

Not so this Sunday! The volume levels will be calm, the atmosphere of the cafe gezellig, and the lights warm and low.

Five storytellers from different walks of life will share stories that explore life in their own unique way.

Entrance is free. Beer is not.
